RYOKO ENDO
Ryoko Endo creates abstract paintings that stem from a lifelong exploration of color relationships and the potential energy embedded in human gesture. For Endo, painting serves primarily as a method of communication.
She began her artistic journey by learning traditional Sumi ink calligraphy. From these early lessons, she developed a more fluid brushwork technique, which, while common in contemporary calligraphy, is rarely applied to acrylic painting. Integrating this method into her painting practice has imbued her work with a distinctive energy. Additionally, Endo studied for ten years under the second-generation abstract expressionist Kikuo Saito, whose influence significantly shaped her approach to color relationships.
Endo's paintings are characterized by their thick layers and a meticulous application of both opaque and translucent paints. This technique creates a dynamic push-pull effect that engages the viewer. A successful painting, for Endo, achieves a delicate balance between harmony and discord, reflecting the complex duality of human experience.
