Susan’s early experience at the ACT Gallery in Toronto in the 1970s laid the foundation for her future work as a curator and art advisor. Collaborating closely with artists who had formed a cooperative, she learned everything about exhibitions – the preparation, curation, installation, shipping, insurance, marketing, and art sales.A later move back to NYC brought opportunities in public relations/marketing and event planning. Simultaneously, she completed her studies at The New York School of Interior Design. She was hired as Marketing Director for a custom design company and developed her own small clientele. In addition to designing floor plans, selecting, and purchasing home furnishings, art was always at the forefront of the process.
Interior Design led the way to real estate sales in the early 2000s. To showcase her listings, Susan would often find a way to stage with art, creating a memorable visual experience.
Through her art connections, she was invited to be a founding member of the Association of Women Art Dealers, which led to the curation of a one-woman show at a large downtown gallery.
As an Upper-Westsider and community activist, Susan was a co-founder of SOS Save our Stores, working with community leaders in an effort to support small businesses. During the Pandemic, along with her art business partner Norma Krieger (the other half of KRIEGER I ELEY ART), she co-curated an important and innovative public art program founded by Barbara Anderson and Jackie Graham, Art on the Ave NYC, highlighting local artistry to a wider audience through venues and empty storefronts.
