MARK T. SMITH
Mark T Smith’s work embraces the classic skills of drawing and painting with the balance of a modern mindset. His work is an experiential exploration of the human drama, from the personal right through to the archetypal. The artist has a primary interest in the tactile experience of making beautiful expressions in the traditional forms of drawing, painting, printmaking and sculpture. To him, artwork has a primary function of ennobling the public, which is a neo-classic counter-revolution to the emotionally vapid, irony for its own sake, and endlessly self-referencing post-modern artwork. In order to recreate an awareness and appreciation of the Arts, it must once more be connected to and integrated into our daily lives in a meaningful way, one that includes the viewer into the visions and experiences of the artwork, and the artist.
He has spent his career participating in a small but influential circle of galleries, art fairs and museums. Mark T. Smith believes that artwork’s primary function is to ennoble the public, which means it must be connected to and integrated into our daily lives. Without applications that create understanding and implant the desire to have the Arts as a permanent partner in our everyday experience of life, he feels Art will lose its purpose. Throughout his career, he has carefully sought out opportunities to display and apply artwork in a manner that will reach as many people as possible, while maintaining tight control on the quality and content of the artwork.
Smith’s work manifests itself in diagrams, notes, maps, drawings, and paintings. Many of the works selected for this website contain imagery about transitions and journeys. It is rare when we have the luxury of time or presence of mind to reflect on a journey prior to embarking on it, which much of Smith’s work examines from the journey of self-discovery to the journey into the realm of religious archetype and insight.
Smith continues to develop his personal visual language, working in a dizzying array of two-dimensional media, including works on paper, canvas, found objects and wood. The artist also has an affinity for linoleum block printing and started working in sculptural media in 2008.
In 2020, after a decade-long semi-hiatus from the art world, Smith reignited the passion within himself and reemerged with renewed vigor. Several commissions served as the cornerstone of this revival, starting with an album cover for UB40. and now, at the age of 55, he is fully engaged in the creative process, diligently producing artwork for an upcoming exhibition scheduled for late 2023 or early 2024.
